ABSTRACT

This chapter questions the claims made by IBM that their supercomputer Watson simulated human-level intelligence to win the game show Jeopardy! The meaning of intelligence is always culturally constructed. Jeopardy!’s selection process and questions are biased to favor the factual and academic type of intelligence culturally associated with middle-class and professional white men. The type of intelligence culturally signified by Watson’s victory was thus modeled on the alleged objectivity and neutrality of the white male mind. Watson tells us nothing about “human” intelligence; it is the third age of automation’s greatest monument to the genius of credentialed whiteness.
