ABSTRACT

Business and human rights (BHR) is a fast-moving topic that is set to stay around and evolve even further in the years to come. The year 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), which have played a major role in shaping management processes for business enterprises to understand and manage their impacts on human rights. The UNGPs rest on the United Nations ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy' Framework, which contributed to re-defining ideas on the roles and responsibilities of business enterprises and managers for their human rights impacts. Human rights concerns arising in the context of low-carbon energy production and the establishment of production sites demonstrate that human rights issues are still frequently overlooked or come under pressure from other societal concerns. BHR theory and practice holds much promise for a fair transition and avoiding that climate change mitigation loses popular support due to harm caused to host communities and other stakeholders.
