ABSTRACT

The idea of human rights seeks to balance the capacity of powerful agents to abuse their power to the detriment of less powerful individuals. From a philosophical perspective, the discussion on human rights in business context targets issues of an overarching character related to the extent and form of business enterprises' responsibilities for their impacts as well as impacts in a specific context. Human rights abuse caused by a company, its supply chains, or other business relations can lead to considerable economic losses for the company involved in the abuse. Human rights are a form of rights that are particularly important to human dignity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides a core list of global applicability that can be used as a point of departure for many conversations on human rights. In overall terms, human rights cover civil liberties, political freedoms, and cultural practices along with claims to social and economic goods.
