ABSTRACT

This chapter considers business and human rights in the context of wider global sustainability concerns. It discusses Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their connection to human rights, the SDG significance of business enterprises respecting human rights, and potential for contributing to salient local needs as part of their SDG efforts. The chapter focuses on climate change from the perspective of a fair transition. Set out in the soft law resolution with the full title ‘Transforming our world: the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development', the 17 SDGs aims to advance sustainable development across the overarching topics of ‘people', ‘planet', ‘prosperity', ‘peace', and ‘partnerships'. SDG 17 frames the partnership approach as a broad call for collaboration between governments, intergovernmental organizations, providers of development finance, technology and capacity building expertise, a balanced global trade system, and for generally encouraging and promoting effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships.
