ABSTRACT

This chapter recaps this research’s aims and findings, and expresses some avenues for future research and some short reflections on the implications of this work for the study of dictatorship. Fruitful avenues might be the study of local institutions and the effects of decentralization on democratic consolidation processes, while applying a Critical Racist perspective to the international system might enhance our understanding why great powers shore up personalist tyrants in far-flung regions, which counterparts they would never tolerate as neighbors.
