ABSTRACT

There are a few considerations to keep in mind when using the expressive arts with a child or young person. This chapter summarizes the considerations by using the acronym ‘S.A.F.E.L.Y.’ The acronym denotes Safe space, Attune to and accept the child, Follow the child's lead, Empathy is healing, Listen to the child and label any feelings that arise, and Yes to expression. The key role of an adult who is supporting a child or young person is to attune to the child and be accepting of their emotions. When using the expressive arts with a young person, it is desirable to follow their lead and to trust that they know what they need to heal. Having an adult who communicates empathy whilst a child or young person uses the expressive arts, supports their ability to allow expression for the emotions associated with painful experiences.
