ABSTRACT

One of the most challenging aspects of loss is adjusting to a new reality. Adjusting may require a child or young person to rethink their future. They may even adopt a new sense of identity following a significant loss. Solution-focused or strengths-based work may be needed to help the child to identify new goals and develop new friendships and connections. As part of bereavement support or counselling, a new daily ritual and routine may be discussed, such as a daily (or weekly) practice to pause for reflection in a special place. Coping skills or self-care techniques may be discussed as part of a wider plan of help and support. The child or young person may come up with their own ideas for calming strategies e.g. mindful breathing, nurturing sensory experiences, exercise or physical activities, and spending time in nature or with animals.
