ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 describes what kind of self and personhood the Pratyabhijñā thinkers have in mind. It focuses in particular on the passage from consciousness, as defined in the previous chapters, to the notion of self, conceived as an entity having specific characteristics. Furthermore, the chapter discusses some specific problems, like the disputable claim that in cognizing something one is always aware of oneself as the subject of knowledge. It also argues that Utpaladeva’s philosophy is best understood as a form of panpsychism.
