ABSTRACT

This chapter explores two aspects of self belief: feeling confident and developing the confidence in others. Self belief can be regarded synonymously with confidence. It is the individual's awareness of his ability to undertake a task. Self image is the system of characteristics available to an individual in defining himself. Self esteem is the evaluation of self along the dimensions used to describe self. Self vulnerability is the perception of change in self occuring under stressful circumstances. Self belief is the estimate or one's ability to execute a task successfully. Faced with a task, the person first estimates how effective he will be in successfully completing the task. The outcome of engaging in the task then influences the individual's self belief. The chapter suggests the athlete's estimate of efficacy determines how they will approach the task, an estimate fundamentally driven by the athlete's self belief.
