ABSTRACT

A working party of officials established by the Commission has itself produced preliminary findings on the impact of '1992' on particular industrial sectors across the EC. Sectors with low penetration rate and low nontariff barriers:Little impact expected from completion of internal market. Low level of EC trade is explained by structural factors proper to each industry and non-tariff barriers are not involved. Agri-food activities should experience a major impact as the protectionist barriers come down, though their overall economic significance is low. A single EC market should help to lessen this dependence on traditional industries and allow for a move into the more advanced sector, which would require a higher level of productivity. The impact of '1992' is thus expected to vary significantly from sector to sector, and indeed from region to region. The greatest impact will be felt in those sectors currently affected the most by high nontariff barriers.
