ABSTRACT
Aside from other indigenous languages spoken in the Caucasus, almost everyone in Azerbaijan speaks Russian. Many will also know a smattering at least of one or more European languages — such as German and English, while the older generations tend to know French. Because Azerbaijanis are found living over a wide area outside of the republic of Azerbaijan — added to which is the obvious influence of traditional Islam and modern politics — you will find many speakers of Farsi, Arabic and Turkish.
