ABSTRACT

The Isthmus Zapotecs are true extroverts, gay, casual, and out-spoken, totally lacking that stolid, inscrutable attitude which the general public is accustomed to regard as Indian. They are unconventional and uninhibited in their relations with their fellow men, as can readily be seen in the manner in which the market women clap their hands to attract the attention of someone a distance away, yelling at one another at the top of their lungs to close a business deal or to ask a question, and even more so in their love for parades in which they can exhibit themselves and their festival attire. Race pride is indeed a characteristic of the Isthmus Zapotecs. There is none of the evasive behavior or servile humility of peoples whose character stamina has been broken by more direct class oppression.
