ABSTRACT

Samuel Daniel (1562-1619), educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, entered the service of the Countess of Pembroke as tutor to William Herbert and so joined the Wilton circle. Early he showed promise as a poet, and Spenser in Colin Clout is able to speak of him as A new shepheard late up sprang, The which doth all afore him far surpasse; Appearing well in that well tuned song, Which late he sung unto a scornfull lasse.
