ABSTRACT

Robert Burton (1577-1640) migrated from Brasenose to a Studentship at Christ Church where he spent the rest of his days paucis notus. Paucioribus ignotus as the author of the Anatomy of Melancholy, he hardly needs an introduction here. Burton treats the Faerie Queene either as a source of finely phrased commonplaces, or as a romance filled with examples of nicely illustrative types.
