ABSTRACT
Nicholas Ferrar (1592-1637) was a Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge, but, like his friend George Herbert, withdrew from academic and public life to give himself to religion and letters. The two short passages below betray a mistrust of the whole tradition of heroic poetry – one shared perhaps, but overcome, by Milton. The Story Books date from after 1631.
