ABSTRACT

The simple non-linear models form the basic building blocks of the approach to new media design. Non-linear models underlie the construction of new media products. The Given and New model divides information into two halves, or ‘poles’, which contrast with each other in one way or another. A text contrasting the past with the present is based on this principle, as is a text contrasting environmentally friendly with environmentally unfriendly practices. Like the Given and New model, the Ideal and Real model is based on polarization and divides information into two contrasting halves, or poles. A widely recognized problem with the term ‘language’ is the great range of its application. This word has prompted innumerable definitions. The star pattern has a central element and a number of other elements arranged around it. Star relations can obtain between a nucleus and only two satellites, or even one.
