ABSTRACT

The first translation was a translation from linear texts into the non-linear models that map out, or make explicit, non-linear underlying semantic structure. The ‘second translation is the translation of the non-linear model into an actual new media product such as a website. This translation consists of two stages. The non-linear model is first turned into a non-linear storyboard and then into the new media product itself. This chapter, focus on the new media products themselves. Second translations can be implicit or explicit. Implicit translations convert all or part of the non-linear model back into linear text. This implicit method of translating network relations contrasts with explicit translations into navigation links that are usually realized by clickable underlined wordings. Explicit translations from non-linear models into some kind of perceivable design may be either overt or covert.
