ABSTRACT

In 1995, only 69 percent of American children lived with both their parents. The other 31 percent lived with only their mothers, fathers, or neither parent. The US Government estimates that 61 percent of children born in 1987 will spend some time in a single-parent household before they reach the age of eighteen. Few aspects of family life are more culturally determined than the ages of betrothal, marriage, and childbearing. We are all familiar with peoples among whom teen marriage and teenage mothers are not only common but the expected norm. Professionals have often found that group sessions with both sets of grandparents and the teen parents can go a long way in resolving conflicts and facilitating decision making.
