August 1916 to January 1917 is among the most eventful as well as the most productive years of Sassoon’s life, but it begins fairly quietly. Outwardly, its first five months are one of the least dramatic periods of the War for him. Passed wholly in England, they appear to be a time of rest, recuperation and gentle socializing. Inwardly, however, it is a period of great change as his attitude towards the War hardens.
