ABSTRACT
The first half of the nineteenth century witnessed a gradual transformation from the old forms of folk and street football to the beginnings of the game we know today. The late eighteenth century had seen an increase in the enclosure of agricultural land that had reduced the space available for popular recreation. The growth of industry, too, with its demand for long and regular hours of work reduced the time that town-dwellers had to indulge in forms of leisure.
