ABSTRACT

This chapter encompasses a range of abilities that synthesize to create a product or a performance. Much thought has been invested in the criteria by which judgements are ultimately made and the method of grading that most appropriately communicates students’ achievements. Not surprisingly, peer and self-assessment have an important formative and summative role to play, not only to develop these important skills in learners, but also to relieve the pressure from teachers as the sole arbiter of students’ achievements when aesthetics are a prominent component of the outcome. Since the study materials are delivered entirely online, there is an acknowledgement that learners will choose their own pathways through the topics. However, a recommended pathway is provided, both as a list and a flowchart. The professional development nature of this unit makes it very accessible, versatile and flexible. It is self-paced, asynchronous and online, and can therefore successfully reach its target audience of trainers anywhere, anytime.
