ABSTRACT

Ralph Nader was born on February 27, 1934, in Winsted, Connecticut, a small town of 10,000 people in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, about thirty miles from Hartford near the state’s border with Massachusetts. His parents, Nathra and Rose Nader, were both immigrants from Lebanon. After graduating from The Gilbert School in June 1951, Nader attended the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs at Princeton University. At a time when social conformity was the norm, he stood out as something of a rebel. He also managed to learn enough Russian, Chinese, and Spanish so that by the time of his graduation, he could converse in five different languages. Nader denounced as well the insurance industry and the auto safety establishment for failing to demand of the automakers that they make safer cars.
