ABSTRACT

This chapter is an accumulation of exercises and lesson plans that actually implement the author's theory of delivery through drama or performance of some type. It lists approaches, ideas, and activities that teachers may use in their classes to reinstate delivery. In order to suggest ways of sequencing a series of related speaking, writing, and listening activities into a curricular approach, the chapter outlines James Moffett’s strategies from his book Active Voices. It presents two entire lesson plans from beginning to completed essay in an effort to show how teachers can reincorporate delivery for two types of writing commonly used in first-year college courses. These two lesson plans deal largely with the issue of audience awareness, one being geared toward narrative writing and the second toward expository. By borrowing from the theater, teachers can easily give students the tools to incorporate their voices and bodies in every step of the writing process.
