ABSTRACT

JOURNAL: This is frustrating work. Every time you figure out how to remove one rock you find two or three rocks under it. But we are getting there, one rock at a time, I guess. It’s clear to me now that the objective of our strategy must be continuous improvement. That also seems to be the common characteristic of the world-class companies I’ve been looking at. It’s why they are leading companies year after year. They’re restless in this way. If we continuously improve, and at a faster rate than our leading competitors, then we must eventually overtake them. This is a distance race, not a sprint. But continuous improvement is the objective of our strategy to achieve our mission. What are the details of that strategy? A strategic objective is not a strategy. Here I go turning over rocks again. What are the areas in which we must continually improve; everything? How does one go about continuously improving? Are particular skills involved?
