ABSTRACT

A number of books (and some loose papers) among the Lord Chamberlain’s records list those who made up the Royal Household. From time to time new lists were compiled, all of which were modified in turn as membership of the Household changed. The lists printed below continue the series from those published in Records of English Court Music Vol. I, pp. 215-233. British Library, Add. MS 18958 is an Establishment Book for James II when he was still Duke of York. LC 3/29, covering 1685-1688, is lost, but the entries can be retrieved from Lafontaine, The King’s Musick. Dates beside the names generally seem to record when a musician was sworn in. This effectively marked the beginning of service, though many administrative hurdles remained. Some entries conclude with a extra name: fLd. Ranelagh’ in 1689-90, for instance. It seems likely that that person acted as a sponsor for the musician concerned.
