ABSTRACT

Two copies of these annual accounts, one on paper and one on parchment, were prepared in the Audit Office and sent to the Treasury. Here they were declared before the Lord High Treasurer or Chancellor of the Exchequer and two other Commissioners of the Treasury. Then they were signed and registered at the Treasury in volumes known as ‘Declared Accounts’ and ‘Auditors States of Accounts.’ The paper copy was returned to the Audit Office while the parchment one was sent to the Office of the King’s Remembrancer of the Exchequer and enrolled in the series known as ‘Enrolments of Public Accounts’. Finally it was forwarded to the Clerk of the Pipe who enrolled an abridgment of it and retained the original. The Pipe Office series (E.351) is held at Chancery Lane and the Audit Office series (A01) at Kew.
