ABSTRACT

Only the final one-third of the entries in Book III consists of notes made by Li Jiubiao himself, during Aleni’s stay in Haikou (III.29–43, 12 August – 12 September 1632). The remainder is based on “separate records” (fenlu) supplied by Yan Zanhua from Zhangzhou and Yan Weisheng from Quanzhou, which he received by mail, as described in the introductory note. The text has been corrected (dingzheng) by Zhang Geng, the leader of the Christian community in Quanzhou, who also was present during Aleni’s stay in Dehua (III.14–25). Three more converts, all from Quanzhou prefecture, are listed as having contributed to the finalization of the text as readers and assistant editors. 1
