ABSTRACT

Book V of Kouduo richao covers a period of seven months, from 24 November 1633 to 29 June 1634, but the conversations recorded (forty-two entries) actually only took place on twenty-nine days. The entries are concentrated in three blocks that correspond to Aleni’s visits to Jian’ou, Yongchun and Haikou. For the first two parts Li Jiubiao has relied on the notes supplied by two local reporters, Yang Kui from Jianyang (Jianning prefecture) and Chen Jingming from Yongchun. The remaining entries (V. 13–42) have been recorded by Li Jiubiao himself, with a very intensive coverage: thirty entries made during two weeks. Four other converts from various prefectures are listed as assistant editors and revisers. 1
