ABSTRACT

Despite its colourful history, psychopathology is only now beginning to mature as a discipline in its own right. It straddles psychiatry, clinical psychology, neurology and the neurosciences in general. Its rapid growth makes it difficult to predict developments, even in the near future. We realise that in concluding our book with an exercise in crystal-ball gazing, we will probably be obliged to eat (at least some of) our words in due course! However we think that psychopathology does have an exciting future and in the following sections we map out, in no particular order, some of the issues that we expect will shape its development in the coming years.
