ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we consider the different explanations for the causes of anxiety disorders. As with schizophrenia and depression, a variety of both somatogenic and psychogenic theories has been proposed. As each is considered, remember that they are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Indeed, you will see there is good evidence to suggest that a stress-diathesis model, involving the interaction of somatogenic and psychogenic factors, best accounts for the aetiology of anxiety disorders.
