ABSTRACT

Barbed wire barriers on the aerodrome and along the road to the town recall the emergency, the years of terror when bombs exploded almost every evening at the onset of dusk, most of them without doing any damage. The Greeks claimed that there were still 15,000 weapons, including mortars, in Turkish hands and the Turks maintained that the Greeks were armed to the teeth. Young Cypriots had been trained in the use of arms in Greece, the shipments of weapons which reached Cyprus came mainly from Greece, and Greek teachers brought up the young in the nationalist spirit. The old nationalist forces have entered upon a phase of institutional consolidation, but new groups are already appearing to take their place in Cyprus. The main propaganda is directed towards ‘national liberation’. This means the removal of the British from the bases in Cyprus which remain under British sovereignty.
