ABSTRACT

The legal structure of the Republic of Cyprus resembles a Chinese pagoda with many roofs and little bells moving in the breeze. There is no doubt that the international agreements restrict the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus. The Arab countries, particularly the United Arab Republic, tried to prevent Cyprus recognizing Israel, going so far as to hint that they might expel the 15,000 Greek Cypriots living in Egypt. Cyprus is a two-headed presidential Republic led by Archbishop Makarios, assisted by the Turkish Vice-President, Dr Fazil Kusuk. The Greeks are inclined to stress the disagreements which appeared in the political leadership of the Cypriot Turks after the revolution in Ankara, while the Turks point out the growing influence of the Communists in the Greek camp.
