ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a PowerPoint presentation of 20 slides with additional notes and a range of activities to support the facilitator in delivering the presentation. The purpose of the presentation is to enable staff to understand the issues surrounding the current epidemic of obesity in children and young people, and how to tackle them. Increasing obesity in childhood has been described as a 'time-bomb'. Although BMI has the potential to be distorting, it provides a convenient and accurate means of defining overweight and obesity in children. Sedentary behaviors are often linked to excess consumption of calories, exposure to food advertising and reduced feelings of satiety if eating while watching television. The programme consists of 12 sessions and focuses on key messages about healthy living that will not only help pupils to be healthier and happier right now, but will also provide the knowledge and skills they need for lifelong health. .
