ABSTRACT
The influence of Marxism on Japanese intellectual life reached a highwater mark in the years immediately following the Second World War. The left-wing academics who had been dismissed from their posts or imprisoned during the war returned to their universities with reputations enhanced by their history of opposition to militarism. At the same time the leading right-wing ideologues of the war period were purged.
