ABSTRACT

One of the major problems facing managers is employee resistance to change. Reduction in output, chronic complaining, hostility, tardiness, and absenteeism, along with turnover, are signs of resistance. Most employees view change as a threat to security. Managers, by understanding why employees feel threatened, are better able to develop a plan for eliminating the threat or turning it into an advantage. Employees, educated and armed with the best knowledge and technologies, will command higher salaries, better benefits, and more leisure time than ever before. Increased government regulations will affect not only businesses, but people employed by those businesses. Employment practices regarding hiring, firing, and wage-and-salary issues will be scrutinized more closely. Managers will bear the ultimate responsibility for handling change. Some will fail to meet the challenge, while others will take charge with a promise of new opportunities.
