ABSTRACT

As a biologist Dennis is convinced that actions of generosity are all tied to selfishness. He feels that our main drive is self survival and any generous acts are done to assure our own satisfaction and personal well being. If we apply some of the concept of generosity to the framework of getting beyond difference, however, we must be able to wrestle first with the “what’s in it for me” question. Most people concluded that the tone for generosity was set with early experiences with family, however, it was also acknowledged that somewhere in the scheme of growing up, a more selfish agenda occurs. Some of those in the conversation, felt that the natural tendencies of egocentricity take over. Others felt that the rigors of competition push people toward selfishness.
