ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author is concerned about telethons or other charitable forms of fund-raising, is that they often draw the line that positions people who have difference as those in the “They” category. An interesting reflection on pity is found in the writings of Ram Dass and Paul Gorman in their strong book, How Can I Help? They write: Compassion and pity are very different. Ram Dass and Paul Gorman’s perspective on pity reinforce this sense of difference and separateness. When the readers pause to really examine pity they find that it works contrary to interdependence. Still most people continue to embrace pity as a “natural” reaction to difference. If a person led an active lifestyle, full of pace of flow, and then finds themselves confronting a sedentary situation due to the imposition of difference, a number of emotions can follow.
