ABSTRACT

Although respeaking is gaining momentum and has consolidated as the preferred method for the production of live subtitles around the world, the respeaking landscape is far from homogeneous. The number of respeakers has increased considerably over the past years. As far as the setting and equipment are concerned, the ideal situation is to have sound-proof booths for respeakers. Another possibility is to have soundproof rooms where several respeakers can work together, although this may lead to interferences between them. In the UK, respeakers usually have a computer and a TV screen in front of them. Respeakers at Mundovision/RBM are all in-house professionals and usually deal with both live and pre-recorded deaf and hard of hearing. Many of the current respeakers are in-house off-line subtitlers who have been trained in respeaking. The Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona was the first university to offer respeaking training in Spain and the first one to offer online respeaking training in the world.
