ABSTRACT
Having become consolidated as a successful technique for the provision of live subtitles on TV, respeaking is now being used in different settings such as museums, galleries, theatres, conferences, classrooms and even churches. This chapter describes some of the present applications of respeaking and points to other potential uses of this technique in these and other settings. Between February and June 2009, a series of lunchtime talks were made accessible through respeaking to ten participants with different hearing abilities at the National Gallery in London. Conferences are an obvious setting for the use of respeaking, be it intralingual or interlingual. Finally, conference respeakers must also give some thought to their audience. Respeakers are expected to prepare these texts in advance. Church respeakers are expected to have a thorough knowledge of the different parts of the Holy Mass and to be quick to change from semi-live to live subtitling while applying the different subtitling features at play.
