ABSTRACT

§1. The method originally laid down for our procedure was to test our hypothesis as to the nature of æsthetic experience empirically. An attempt has been made to do this first by drawing on the most trustworthy report of experience, that of introspection. It remains to check this by the reports of other persons, restricting ourselves of necessity to some selected field. The inevitable restriction may be made with regard to both time and subject. The time should preferably be not our own day, where it is hard to avoid the bias of fashion in assessing the importance of the material.
