¹ Tanto tempo é che sono finite le mie corrispondenze Italiene, ² che non sarebbe maraviglia se con loro havessi anche perduta la facolta d’esprimermi in questa si dolce favella. vorrei pero provar le mie, anzi le sue forze, poiche mi sta offerta dalla cara sorella una si gradita occasione di farlo. ma so ben chein che in questa medissima lingua, atta piu d’ogni altra à dipingere li vivi sentimenti dei cuori, non é possibile di parlar degnamente del affetto del mio verso di lei. cambio dunqne di stile, e ripiglio il nostro rozzo e gotico Inglese. these are the only lines which I have writ in Italian these many years. I am glad you learn the language, for you will find in it a multitude of things extreamly entertaining, and writ with great grace & delicacy. make my compliments to my Lady, ³ those of M:[arquise] d:[e] V:[illette] to her & to you are made in another Letter. ⁴ present my compliments to Mrs Gower, and tell her y^t I hope she has receiv’d my letter, as I suppose she may about this time receive the lilly of the valley flowers, which I send her both dry, & steeping in y^e best Brandy which this country affords.
