ABSTRACT

A theory of the origin of relatively permanent association is necessarily a theory of the origin of society, which must have had a structure or organization. Thus, a theory of the origin of relatively permanent association is also a theory of the origin of primordial social structure. Subject to relatively similar stimuli from the relatively similar habitat and characterized by relatively similar organisms, members of the aggregate will exhibit multiple simultaneous similar states of consciousness or social consciousness. The other more idealistic-subjectivist approach invokes the notion of social consciousness – either as the consciousness of selves and others in association or the similarity of states of consciousness of persons in the group. Social consciousness seems to mean the composite consciousness of individuals about the feelings of one another. Government is the organ by which such consciousness is ascertained and appropriate action taken.
