ABSTRACT

Marcuse’s view of the good society is one of cooperation, mutual understanding and all round individual development. It is a society where all will be able to engage in the type of work which most suits their needs and their aspirations. Marcuse’s idea of the good society is an appealing one. Contrary to the impression conveyed by many other implicit or explicit utopias appearing in the literature, it is resolutely future orientated. The socialization to freedom may well come about in unexpected ways, and this points to what is perhaps one of Marcuse’s weaknesses. While the contradictory nature of present capitalist societies is ever present in his work, the images his texts convey of the co-operative society are always ones of peace and harmony. The project of liberation and the idea of freedom which animates his work, and gives force to Marcuse’s critique of contemporary society is clear, constant and solid throughout his writings, as to the main lines.
