ABSTRACT

All meaning, all value, all purpose, in the historical world, is rooted in the experience of individual human beings who lived at a particular time and in particular circumstances. This raises the spectre of the historical relativity of all values and beliefs. The very consciousness of the historical relativity of all values represents the ultimate liberation of the human mind from all dogmatic narrowness. Whenever connections occur in history and wherever there is freedom within reality, one must apply the concept of meaning. Meaning or value cannot be possessed by something which cannot be understood. In an age general norms, values and purposes arise and the meaning of an action has to be grasped in relation to them. According to whether these are only conditionally, or unconditionally, determined there is a further difference. It appears that even within one nation there is conflict about values.
