ABSTRACT

The logic of the linear sequence described comes both from the creative demands of planting and landscape designs and the need to respond to the client’s requirements. Design process is an intriguing aspect of theory – the ‘how-to’ of design. Every design project begins with some form of contact between the client and the landscape architect. The best way to discuss a prospective commission is face to face, particularly with a new client, so a meeting is often arranged at which the client and designer and, if necessary, other professionals can discuss the scope and objectives of the project. A design ‘concept’ can be a central, generating idea that initiates the design and guides its development, or can be used to describe an abstract level of planning and design at an early stage in the decision-making process.
