ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains how project specifications should be structured and presented using the Common Arrangement of Works Sections. It explores the importance of conditions of contract; the significance of and how the conditions apply to sub-contracts; and advises on the use of standard forms of agreement. The book provides a step-by-step guide to setting-up an agreement between client and contractor using the JCLI Landscape Works Contract 2012 and points to sources of alternative forms of contract used throughout the landscape and construction industries. It examines the different forms of alternative dispute resolution procedures the professional practitioner might encounter, upon which they may wish to advise their client in the event of a contractual dispute, and how these compare each with the other.
