ABSTRACT

This chapter provides effective and meaningful assessment, treatment and management of men with personality disorders in whom there are concerns about their risk of sexual or violent behaviour towards others, the primary goal being to reduce the risk of causing harm to others. There are ongoing monthly consultation sessions with an external consultant in which the focus is on the dynamics of the team and the emotional impact of the work on staff. Some of the difficulties and learning points of the projects have been described above. For the high secure DSPD sites, who have had to recruit very large numbers of staff and train them in preparation for the opening of a much larger number of beds than in the community pilots, staff competencies have been a major focus of the organisational work.
