ABSTRACT
Although the infantile organisation of identity has its economy, allowing the ego to defend itself, for the most part, from the sexual and aggressive taboos linked to the subject’s culture and times, adulthood brings this economy into crisis. While it is legitimate for children to defend themselves from sexuality, this is not the case for adults. Marriage is a rite and a symbol—a stage that is not always easily reached, due to the deep and unconscious link all human beings entertain with the original taboo of incest. In traditional rituals, the sacred serves to forgive original sin and legitimate sexuality with the aim of procreation. The ties symbolised in the rite, however, are not only of a religious nature—rather, religious ties can, at times, provide an alibi or a front for deeper psychological, unconscious ties.
