      ABSTRACT

The author's reflections stemming from his experience of working with children and adolescents have thus far focused prevalently on their drive to grow and mature, and their identifications. As a therapist, and as a human being, he regard this developmental push as an undoubtedly vital aspect that is firmly oriented towards the future. According to Freud’s still very convincing theoretical model, however, our psychic life unfolds simultaneously in two directions which are equally vital, but do not lose sight of the necessity to return to the origin that sooner or later might arise. In developmental movement forward, human beings have no other choice but to continuously exchange objects, so as to hold on to the original object for as long as possible. At the same time, however, the developmental drive pushes the subject to move away from the original object.
