ABSTRACT

Add. MS 4229, fols 1–32. Holograph text by William Wotton, including his characteristic (ab)use of apostrophes. Endorsed on fol. 32 v: ‘An Account of Mr Boyles 1st Experiments’ and ‘No 140’, written sideways on the right hand side of top half of page in a hand which is not Wotton’s but could be that of William Clarke (see Introduction, sects 6–7). On fol. 1 is the note ‘4229 111E’, relating to the classification of the volume as part of the British Museum collection. The versos are blank throughout, except for fol. 32 v. The text is apparently incomplete: the material on fol. 32 v seems to be an addition keyed to a text that formerly faced it: this presumably dealt with one of the experiments following no. xxxv, Wotton’s description of which ends the recto of fol. 32 (this is probably complete, since it lacks a catchword: cf. fol. 24). The original foliation appears in the inner margin at the top of each leaf. See further above, pp. li–iv.
